Strong Recommendation:

I saw Raputina last night, I had never seen them before and since I found their cds under a bush recently I really wanted to check them out. They are two female vocalists/cellists, and a drummer, the cellos sometimes tricked out to sound weirder than any guitar you've heard, or quite beautiful traditional sound. This is not a gimmick band, this is their real personality and frankly I thought they were great. Melora Creager, the songwriter and one constant in a somewhat rotating lineup over their three or so lps- this lineup one totally clicks I think- is incredibly inventive and has a fantastic voice. The songs are weird, quirky, funny, haunting, and plenty of hooks. Plus some surprising covers. I really recommend y'all go see them; a totally unique show. They are playing austin/stubbs tonight, so yall austiners go! Plus there were scores of beautiful goth children there...
Also, the opening band The Hazard County Girls rocked, a cute teenage dark punk threesome, who gave props to Flannery O'Conner and her novel Wiseblood from the stage, possibly one of the very few literary mentions I've ever heard from a punk band! (Jello's spoken word sets don't count!)
