Former Texas Governor Ann Richards, a savvy politician and longtime advocate of civil rights and equal opportunities for women and minorities, will deliver the 6th Annual Louise B. Raggio Lecture in Women’s Studies at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in Wesley Hall at Highland Park United Methodist Church. A dessert reception will immediately follow the dialogue between Richards and Regina Montoya, attorney and past national president of Girls Incorporated.

SMU students, faculty, and staff are invited to pick up a complimentary ticket to the event with their SMU ID at the Mane Desk in Hughes-Trigg. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, until Oct. 2.

In 1990, Richards -- known for her acerbic wit -- became the first woman elected to the state's highest office in more than 50 years. As governor, she promoted government efficiency by authorizing comprehensive audits of every state agency and was widely acclaimed for her unprecedented appointments of women and minorities to major posts. She also focused on education by introducing site-based management to put more power in the hands of the parents and teachers at the local level. During her administration a state lottery was approved and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was passed.
