artillery punch - recipe for disaster?

my dad made this punch and got almost a whole very small town drunk. he was the new guy in town, fresh from new york city. he was employee relations manager for the refinery, where almost everyone in town worked. religious people. they hated him after this. then texaco told him they were shuttering the refinery and his job was to tell everybody.
1 cup sugar
juice six lemons
two tblspoons bitters
one quaret claret
one quart sherry
one quart whiskey
one quart brandy
mix all the above,
then just before serving -
one quart club soda and put it over a block of ice.
the bartenders' guide also suggests small glasses
